Who We Are
Silver Star Communications’ rich history began in 1926 by a group of ranchers and businessmen. Because the population was not large enough to attract the Bell Telephone Company to lower Star Valley Wyoming, the group utilized livestock fencing to carry telephone lines across the valley. In 1956, the Hoopes family purchased the company which has been owned by the family since that time.
In 1990, Silver Star placed the first fiber optic cable in our local exchange area. Since then, we have built out more than 1,100 miles of company-owned fiber optic cable in our network in both local and competitive exchanges. With peering connectivity to Salt Lake, Denver, Seattle and San Jose, our rural customers are solidly connected to the rest of the world.
Today, Silver Star continues to serve customers in eastern Idaho and western Wyoming. Our company continues to invest millions of dollars in its fiber optic network to deliver cutting edge communications solutions including fiber optic, DSL and wireless Internet, voice, mobile phone and business solutions products and services.
As a partially employee-owned (ESOP) company, Silver Star employs 115 people in Star Valley and Jackson, Wyoming as well as in Teton Valley, Swan Valley, Soda Springs, Idaho Falls and Rexburg, Idaho.
Silver Star takes great pride in providing above-and-beyond customer service with a local touch and actively supports the rural communities it serves. Our Caring for Community program supports local nonprofit organizations with over $25,000 in donations a year. All Silver Star employees are committed to giving back by serving in at least one community service project a year.

How does the Caring for Community program work?
Beginning January 1st, we will post an application on this website. Nonprofit organizations in Star Valley, Swan Valley, and Teton Valley are invited to apply. Simply fill out the form by the date indicated, usually in mid-February. All applicants will be notified of the status of their application in early March. Each year Silver Star budgets a certain amount to contribute to the program. A committee is formed, and this committee reviews all applications at one time and chooses recipients.
Caring for Community is closed for 2020. Please mark your calendars for January 2021 to apply for the 2021 program.
Jackson, Idaho Falls and Rexburg nonprofits should review the sponsorship form to see if it is a fit for their request. Any questions can be addressed to [email protected] or call 307.201.5101.
How are organizations chosen?
Silver Star strives to lead by example and support organizations whose mission it is to sustain the quality of life and the unique character of our community for future generations. The committee weighs areas of high-need in the community and tries to ensure that donations have as wide an impact as possible. The application for funding is project-based and requests information about how the funds will be used.
Is your request for a donation or a sponsorship?
The Caring for Community program is for donation requests and is not intended for event sponsorships. If your organization is seeking funds for an event or program in which Silver Star will receive marketing opportunities and brand promotion such as advertising, banner placement, website recognition, etc., your request will be considered a sponsorship opportunity. Simple recognition of Silver Star as a donor to your organization does not qualify as a sponsorship. Please email us with questions or sponsorship requests.
