Serving Our Communities—Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow
Since 1953, La Motte Telephone Company has been serving Northeast Iowa and the towns of La Motte, St. Donatus, and Zwingle. The company strives to provide the best in telecommunications, Internet, and digital television.
The La Motte Telephone Company became incorporated in 1953. In September of 1960, Paul Konrardy was hired as the company’s first full-time manager and maintenance man. In 1962, the company purchased the Zwingle Telephone Company, which added approximately 80 subscribers to the base. Later, in 1968, a new switchboard office and garage was built and a 600 line Automatic Electric switchboard was installed. Toll-free dialing to Dubuque was also established at that time. The first underground cable was plowed in 1971 and continued until the entire exchange was converted to underground cable. In 2005, a new Coppercom Telecom digital switch was placed in service, which gave La Motte subscribers the most up-to-date, state-of-the-art service available.
In the year 2000, the company built a 190-ft PCS tower in Bellevue, Iowa, which provides wireless Internet service to Bellevue and the surrounding areas.
Digital TV was rolled out to the communities of La Motte, St. Donatus, Zwingle, and Cottonville in 2008. To continue giving customers the best in digital TV service, La Motte Telephone Company helped form the Iowa Video Group in 2013, through which the updated and popular Minerva system is now offered.
Another tower was constructed in 2010 just outside of Springbrook, Iowa, providing wireless Internet service to Springbrook and the surrounding previously underserved area.
In the fall of 2011, La Motte Telephone Company purchased Andrew Telephone Company. The first telephone systems in Andrew were privately owned until the company became incorporated in 1960, at which time a Stromberg-Carlson X-Y dial switch was installed in an office equipped for 300 numbers and 70 lines. Wilson Cornelius, who had previously owned the switchboard and farm lines, along with Milt Cornelius, who became active with the company after his discharge from the Air Force, started burying cable in 1976 to begin converting all lines to single party. In the 1980s, a cable TV system was built within the city limits that operated for a number of years. In 2013, Digital Television was brought back to the Andrew area during the rollout of the new system in La Motte.
Looking toward the future, fiber-to-the-home has been completed in the Andrew exchange, and is a nearly completed project in the La Motte exchange. Although faced with ever-increasing costs of doing business outside the urban landscape, La Motte and Andrew Telephone Company continues the commitment to serve the telecommunication needs of its rural neighbors, many in hard-to-reach areas.
The company’s employees include: JoAnne Gregorich, General Manager; Rod Engler, Plant Manager; Larry Bartels, Service Tech; Mike Olsen, Service Tech; Bob Kilburg, Service Tech; Carla Ehlers, Customer Service Rep; Marilee Aschenbrenner, Customer Service Rep; and Sandy Pitts, Customer Service Rep.****This institution is an equal opportunity provider and employer.****
